Pokemon Go Tips

Pokemon go

Hey I’m going to try something new on GoodStuffAtHome and on my YouTube Channel from now on. I post about several different topics (Food, Drink, Gardening, DIY & Tech) instead of focusing on a small niche. Everyone says that you should focus on a niche and you shouldn’t try to cover too many things.  It’s bad for building readership and it’s bad for SEO. Well, to me, my site is all about making things. I like to make good stuff. Whether its in the kitchen or the garage or out in the garden, it’s all good stuff to me.

My new idea is to spend each week linking these different categories together with a common theme. People like things that come in weeks, like Shark Week, Fleet Week and Fashion Week. So I’m going to start theming my weeks too. For example if I was doing Blueberry Week, I could post a blueberry pie recipe in the Food category, a how to grow blueberry bushes in the gardening category, build a bird netting fence to protect the blueberries for the DIY category and so on. I may not cover all all the categories each week but I want to give this a shot.

So how could this week be anything other than Pokemon Week? Pokemon Go came out 4 days ago and it’s taking the world by storm. Today’s post is going in the Tech category so I’ll share some Pokemon Go tips that I’ve learning by playing over the weekend.

The first tip is to switch to Low Power Mode. Using the GPS, while maintaining a good cellular connection uses so much battery that you phone might even get very hot. There’s a park near my house with a walking path that goes around a lake. It also has lots of benches that have those memorial plaques on them that say things like, “In memory of the <so and so> family”. Each bench is a Pokestop. So my kids and I go there and walk around the lake and hit all the Pokestops, spin them and collect the goods. Yesterday we did three laps (about a mile) and my iPhone 6 Plus went from 100% to about 40%. Both my kids have iPhone 6 and both were completely dead.

To turn on low power mode and make your battery last longer, tap the Pokeball, then tap the gear in the top right that says “Settings”. You want to make sure the battery saver option has a check mark next to it.

Make sure Battery Saver is checked

Second tip is to bring an extra battery. If you have an Android phone with a replaceable battery that’s pretty easy. But iPhone users are out of luck with that so bring one of those battery cases or an external battery. With extra power you can catch even more Pokemon.

Third tip is to catch every Pokemon you see and then send any duplicates back to Professor Willow. When you do so you get a piece of candy that you can use to Power Up or Evolve your Pokemon. But wait until you get back home for this. When you’re out and about, you should be looking for Pokemon. The transfer button is below the Power Up & Evolve buttons. Scroll down and you’ll see it.

I’ll trade you one Pokemon for 1 candy

And the last tip is not to ignore any of the sad looking Magikarps that you find. I know they look like a joke to people who never watched the cartoon but you definitely want to catch them all. And then when you have 400 Magikarp Candies saved up you can Evolve it into Gyarados. And Gyarados is no joke. I only have 21 candies right now but I’ll keep walking around that lake until I get there.

So come back tomorrow or Wednesday and Pokemon week will continue. I have a few ideas for Pokemon cocktails, food and woodworking project. I’m hoping that I can get it all of these posts created and do a YouTube Video also.

Neko Atsume Catbook

Do you like collecting cats? How about being visited by cats and then taking their pictures? No, not in real life. That would be weird. But there’s a great iOS game called Neko Atsume where you collect cats and take pictures of them.

You put out food and toys for the cats to play with and if you’re lucky they’ll come and visit you. When you obsessively check the game every free chance you get, you can actually see and take pictures of the cats in your house or yard. And as you take pictures of them, the pictures go into your Neko Atsume Catbook.

It’s a totally odd game but it’s strangely addictive. If you put out different toys or different kinds of food you get different cats to come and visit. Trying to figure out all combinations is a lot of fun. And then there’s a fat cat named Tubbs who comes and eats all the food that you put out. Tubbs is evil.

Do you want to see all of the cats that I’ve collected in Neko Atsume? I now have every single cat including the new ones from the March update, Apricot, Ganache, Sapphire & Jeeves. (Last updated April 2016)

Here’s a video of my Neko Atsume Catbook.

Alto’s Adventure Review

Alto’s Adventure Review

If you have been looking for a iOS game where you rescue llamas on your snowboard then today is your lucky day.

Alto’s Adventure is an endless snowboarding game. It’s like an endless runner but you’re on a snowboard instead. You see how far you can go before you crash. Sounds easy enough right? If something is in your way, you tap the screen and jump over it. Well it’s harder than it seems because some of the obstacles require a speed boost to clear. The way to get speed boosts is by doing a trick. If you touch the screen and hold it instead of just tapping it, you will do a backflip. You can get speed boosts by back flip or jumping up onto the long ropes above the slope and grinding along the buntings or even bouncing off the top of a rock.

What sets this game apart is the beautiful but simple graphics and great music. Hats off to the artists on this one.

The llamas are part of the backstory of your character. You’re a llama herder and your llamas are trying to run away. I guess they aren’t fond of you and they’re willing to risk running down a mountain to escape. You “rescue” them by snowboarding past them. After you do, the llamas slow down and presumable go back up the hill. The story isn’t important, just remember to go past the llamas and do tricks along the way.

And to make it even more interesting the game has goals for you to achieve and that will level up your character. The goals are things like do a back flip, bounce off a rock, escape an elder back flip over a campfire. As you collect points there’s a shop for you to buy a few power up items. Definitely be sure to pick up the wing suit when you can. It’s loads of fun.

Different tricks are worth different points. Stringing together a few tricks in a row will get your more points. Bounce off of a rock and land on the rope. Do a backflip off of a hill and then bounce off the top of a rock. You get the idea.

Every once in a while you’ll snowboard past an Elder. I guess he’s called the Elder because he has a big beard but he’s just this guy camping out on the mountain. When you snowboard past him I think you interrupt the private time he’s having with his llama and that makes him mad. I don’t blame him because when someone snowboards past me when I’m trying to have some private time with my llama I get pissed too. Well this Elder will chase you and if he catches you the game is over. You can only escape him by crossing a chasm. And you stay ahead of him by doing more tricks and getting speed boosts.

When one of your goals is the dreaded triple back flip, you definitely need to use Maya. Maya is the best flipper and she can pretty much do a full flip from the smallest of hills.

Here’s a video of me completing two triple back flips in one run. That’s a goal for a later level. Not sure which one it was but I was stuck there for a long time.

Give Alto’s Adventure a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Official Destiny Live Action Trailer
Live action Destiny would make a great movie.

Have you seen this game trailer yet?  It’s for a brand new video game called Destiny. The game has been all over the news this week because it is now the most successful new video game launch in history. It made a half a billion dollars in one day.

Now that’s pretty impressive. But what I like a lot more than that is this live action game trailer. They basically made it just to get the fanboys salivating before the launch. Judging by the sales, it definitely worked. And I’m sure those fanboys (I’m including myself in this group) are all clamoring for a movie feature based on this live action trailer. That would be awesome!

Angry Birds Star Wars Gameplay

Angry Birds Star Wars – coming November 8th

The fine people of Rovio (who must all be filthy rich by now) have released a gameplay video for their upcoming game, Angry Birds Star Wars. And so if you were wondering how they were going to merge Angry Birds with Star Wars, the video will give you an idea of how they did it. And I must say that I’m impressed.

It looks like Angry Birds Star Wars will more like Angry Birds Space instead of regular Angry Birds. Also the different birds now have different Star Wars related powers. It looks like there’s a lightsaber wielding bird, a blaster shooting bird and force using bird. There’s also a few more in the gameplay video that have to do with R2D2 and C3PO but their abilities aren’t clear. And the wookie bird just looks like one of those giant heavy birds that causes a lot of damage.

I’m definitely going to download this game when it comes out (November 8th).

Ninja Fishing Boats

Ninja Fishing Boats

Ninja Fishing

A while back, my favorite iPhone game was Ninja Fishing by Gamenauts. I was totally obsessed with it and played it all the time. At one point I was even ranked as one of the Top 100 players in the world in Game Center. So of course I wrote a Ninja Fishing Review on this blog.

For those of you who have never played Ninja Fishing, it’s a cross between a fishing game and a Fruit Ninja style swipe to chop stuff game. You lower your fishing line as deep as you can, tilting the iPhone/iPad to avoid snagging a fish on the way down. Once you reach the end of your fishing line, you reel in as many fish as you can. Now the next part is a little confusing because it doesn’t make much sense but it does make for good game play. You have to slice up all the fish that you just reeled in. I would think this would be done later after you’ve returned to shore or gone to the fish market but whatever, it’s still fun.

When I check my blog stats, it seems that lots of people coming to my site looking to find out what the boats do in Ninja Fishing. So I’m going to help those people and let you know that the answer is not much. Even though the Time Machine boat is used to travel to the dinosaur fish level, the boats are really just there for you to collect. And they also look cool.  Here’s a list of all the different boats:

  • Dinky Fishing Boat
  • Rubber Ducky
  • Steamboat
  • Viking Ship
  • Flaming Pumpkin Ship
  • Xmas Boat
  • Time Machine

And here’s a video I made that shows you what all the boats in Ninja Fishing look like.
