Do you like collecting cats? How about being visited by cats and then taking their pictures? No, not in real life. That would be weird. But there’s a great iOS game called Neko Atsume where you collect cats and take pictures of them.
You put out food and toys for the cats to play with and if you’re lucky they’ll come and visit you. When you obsessively check the game every free chance you get, you can actually see and take pictures of the cats in your house or yard. And as you take pictures of them, the pictures go into your Neko Atsume Catbook.
It’s a totally odd game but it’s strangely addictive. If you put out different toys or different kinds of food you get different cats to come and visit. Trying to figure out all combinations is a lot of fun. And then there’s a fat cat named Tubbs who comes and eats all the food that you put out. Tubbs is evil.
Do you want to see all of the cats that I’ve collected in Neko Atsume? I now have every single cat including the new ones from the March update, Apricot, Ganache, Sapphire & Jeeves. (Last updated April 2016)
If you have been looking for a iOS game where you rescue llamas on your snowboard then today is your lucky day.
Alto’s Adventure is an endless snowboarding game. It’s like an endless runner but you’re on a snowboard instead. You see how far you can go before you crash. Sounds easy enough right? If something is in your way, you tap the screen and jump over it. Well it’s harder than it seems because some of the obstacles require a speed boost to clear. The way to get speed boosts is by doing a trick. If you touch the screen and hold it instead of just tapping it, you will do a backflip. You can get speed boosts by back flip or jumping up onto the long ropes above the slope and grinding along the buntings or even bouncing off the top of a rock.
What sets this game apart is the beautiful but simple graphics and great music. Hats off to the artists on this one.
The llamas are part of the backstory of your character. You’re a llama herder and your llamas are trying to run away. I guess they aren’t fond of you and they’re willing to risk running down a mountain to escape. You “rescue” them by snowboarding past them. After you do, the llamas slow down and presumable go back up the hill. The story isn’t important, just remember to go past the llamas and do tricks along the way.
And to make it even more interesting the game has goals for you to achieve and that will level up your character. The goals are things like do a back flip, bounce off a rock, escape an elder back flip over a campfire. As you collect points there’s a shop for you to buy a few power up items. Definitely be sure to pick up the wing suit when you can. It’s loads of fun.
Different tricks are worth different points. Stringing together a few tricks in a row will get your more points. Bounce off of a rock and land on the rope. Do a backflip off of a hill and then bounce off the top of a rock. You get the idea.
Every once in a while you’ll snowboard past an Elder. I guess he’s called the Elder because he has a big beard but he’s just this guy camping out on the mountain. When you snowboard past him I think you interrupt the private time he’s having with his llama and that makes him mad. I don’t blame him because when someone snowboards past me when I’m trying to have some private time with my llama I get pissed too. Well this Elder will chase you and if he catches you the game is over. You can only escape him by crossing a chasm. And you stay ahead of him by doing more tricks and getting speed boosts.
When one of your goals is the dreaded triple back flip, you definitely need to use Maya. Maya is the best flipper and she can pretty much do a full flip from the smallest of hills.
Here’s a video of me completing two triple back flips in one run. That’s a goal for a later level. Not sure which one it was but I was stuck there for a long time.
Give Alto’s Adventure a try, you won’t be disappointed.
A while back, my favorite iPhone game was Ninja Fishing by Gamenauts. I was totally obsessed with it and played it all the time. At one point I was even ranked as one of the Top 100 players in the world in Game Center. So of course I wrote a Ninja Fishing Review on this blog.
For those of you who have never played Ninja Fishing, it’s a cross between a fishing game and a Fruit Ninja style swipe to chop stuff game. You lower your fishing line as deep as you can, tilting the iPhone/iPad to avoid snagging a fish on the way down. Once you reach the end of your fishing line, you reel in as many fish as you can. Now the next part is a little confusing because it doesn’t make much sense but it does make for good game play. You have to slice up all the fish that you just reeled in. I would think this would be done later after you’ve returned to shore or gone to the fish market but whatever, it’s still fun.
When I check my blog stats, it seems that lots of people coming to my site looking to find out what the boats do in Ninja Fishing. So I’m going to help those people and let you know that the answer is not much. Even though the Time Machine boat is used to travel to the dinosaur fish level, the boats are really just there for you to collect. And they also look cool. Here’s a list of all the different boats:
Dinky Fishing Boat
Flaming Pumpkin Ship
And here’s a video I made that shows you what all the boats in Ninja Fishing look like.
How cool is this? Another new version of Angry Birds is coming out on November 8th. Last time the birds went into space (Angry Birds Space) and I guess they liked it out there because the latest version is called Angry Birds Star Wars.
I have a feeling that if this game is a hit, then we’ll be seeing titles like Angry Birds Avengers, Angry Birds Harry Potter and the like sometime in the future.
If you feel the need to dress like a ninja, row your boat out into a lake for some fishing and then use your sword to chop whatever you catch into sushi, then Ninja Fishing will definitely be your favorite iOS game ever. Even those of us who don’t spend our weekends in costume on the water will still enjoy this game.
So the deal with this game is that you’re a ninja, and a fat ninja at that and you’re fishing. Now to fish you tap to drop your line into the water and when the hook hits a fish, you reel him in. Tilt your iOS device back and forth to guide the hook past the fish and go for more depth. The deeper you go, the more fish you can reel in. Once the fish are reeled in, they fly into the air and you have to swipe them with your finger, fruit ninja style to chop them into sushi. The more you chop, they more money you make. There’s a couple of things that make no sense such as the dynamite that pops up while you’re slicing the fish. I didn’t remember hooking any dynamite. Is there a rival Ninja down there that keeps tossing the dynamite up at me because he wants to corner the fish market? And also t he game doesn’t get into this too deeply but I’m guessing that there’s an invisible sushi supplier that’s in a boat next to you who hauls away your catch and pays you for it.
The most addicting part of this game is the stuff that you can buy with your money. You can upgrade fishing line so that it extends deeper into the ocean or holds more fish. You can get an auto drill that cuts right through the fish on the way down or more gas to power the drill to a deeper depth. You can even upgrade you boat. This doesn’t affect the game play at all up it does look cool to sit there in a viking ship. This isn’t one of those games that constantly bothers you to pay real money for fake game money. Ninja Fishing is fake in game money only.
My only complaint about the game is that it’s not that hard to buy all the upgrades. There was a recent update that doubled the amount of upgrades but I’ve now bought all of those too. I want fish deeper and discover new fish.
For me the best part of iOS games lately is Game Center. I’ve friended my family members and we all check the high scores to see who’s the best in the family. I’ve pulled way ahead in Ninja Fishing and even cracked the top 100 in the world (Game Center says that 150,000 players). That’s pretty cool if you ask me. Now when I come home from work, the kids will give me a hard time if my ranking drops too low, “You’re down to 90th, why didn’t you play at work today?” See how I’m doing or friend me. My Game Center handle is Anthony Compost.
Ninja Fishing has got all the components of a fun, addicting game that you’ll reach for whenever you have a moment. Cool character, good design, social aspects, and the gamification of buying upgrades for money really hooks you in.
Update: Lots of people are coming to this site looking for information about what does the boat upgrade do? The boat upgrade is just to look cool. It doesn’t change the gameplay at all. Sort of lame but the viking ship is pretty cool.
But here’s a video I made that shows you what all the boats in Ninja Fishing look like.
